Naruto Shippuden Episode 91: Summary, Filler Status & More

Naruto Shippuden episode 91 was marked as the exciting start of the famous Three-Tails Appearance arc.  This kicks off the major anime-original block where the Konoha shinobi chase a wild beast, and during this time, they face the Guren, an Orichimaro follower who has a rare Crystal Release style.

Introduction

During long anime, it often seems that main manga normally introduce side stories whenever they need time for the main plot. During this time, they provide us with some fun detours and depth of characters' lives. Episode 91 was originally intended to be the start of some filler episodes, where the story shifted from the main plot of the Mortal Hidden and Kakuza storyline, diverting towards the “Three-Tails Appearance” arc. These episodes focus on Naruto learning new jutsu from Jiraiya and introduce some new characters such as Guren, who possesses a unique Crystal Release style, and Yukimaru, a young boy who is manipulated by Orochimaru because he has the special power of controlling the Three-Tailed beast and wants to use him for rebirth.

Many fans search for this episode because they want to know if it connects in any way to the story, or if they can skip it if it is filler and not connected to the story. Some fans also search for this specific episode because of the Guren power of Crystal style. Most people check episode lists to decide if they should skip or watch this specific block.

What Happens in Episode 91-112 of Naruto Shippuden.

From episode 91 of Naruto Shippuden, the filler arc starts and spans from 91 to 112. This diverted focus from the main plot, which was Team 9 trying to stop the Three-Tails beast after sensing its massive chakra outburst. During these episodes, Naruto tries to learn a new wind-style jujutsu technique with the help of Jiraiya.

New characters such as Guren, who is a powerful follower of Orochimaru who knows rare Crystal Release (Shōton) jujutsu, and also uses Yukimaru, a young boy who can suppress and guide the Three-Tails. Kabuto entrusts Yukimaru to Guren, positioning him as an experimental vessel for Orochimaru’s rebirth plans instead of focusing on Naruto. During this time, Kabuto states regarding the boy’s role,

“This child will become the anchor to control the Sanbi.”

During this time, the Konoha team tracks down Orochimaru's primary base, but when the team arrives, they find the place empty, and Orochimaru has already relocated. Team members realize the delay, noting,

"The rooms are completely cleared out; he abandoned this place days ago."

The primary objective was to seal the wild Three-Tailed beast, but it shifts to stopping the wild, unjinchuriki-less Three-Tails from wreaking havoc. The arc eventually leads to Deidara and Tobi (Obito) as they arrive on the scene to complete their organization's goal. Konoha tries their best for the sealing effort, but the Akatsuki duo successfully subdue and capture the beast.

At that moment, Tobi celebrates the final defeat of the monster, shouting,

"Deidara-senpai, we actually did it! The Sanbi is ours!"

This arc bridges the gap by showing how the Akatsuki steadily gather tailed beasts behind the scenes before the major summit and war arcs. This entire block starting from 91 to 112 is filler episodes and does not contain any original storyline-related content from Masashi Kishimoto’s manga, meaning it does not impact the main overarching plot.

Filler episodes are those episodes that do not push the main plot forward, but the studio made them stall for time for writers. You can skip these entire filler episodes because they do not affect the story, but these episodes still contain some characters, depth or background to the people in the story, so you can even enjoy watching them if you are not in a hurry.

Naruto Shippuden Episode 91 Summary

In episode 91, which is titled “Orochimaru’s Hideout Discovered”, with Kakashi as temporary leader, they head off towards Orochimaru’s hideout. During travel, Kiba recalls his past encounter with Sakon and Ukon and thinks about Akamaru, who got seriously injured. Hinata senses that something is off about Kiba and asks; he relays his thoughts on them. Shino also wants to be part of Sasuke's recovery mission and wants to prove himself to Naruto, but Kiba dismisses him.

On the other side, Naruto and Jiraiya were at a hot spring, where Naruto let out his frustration of how he does not want to rely on Nine-Tails power. During their conversation, Jiraiya realised that Naruto is still adamant about rescuing Sasuke; thus, Jiraiya decided that Naruto should learn a new technique.

Here in filler episode 91, a new character, Guren also introduces how to have special Crystal Release technique. Guren was a follower of Orochimaro and was sent by him to seal the beast. During the mission, of the twenty-one followers, sixteen of them revolt and try to kill her, but she easily defeats them by using her Crystal Release technique. The remaining five pledge their loyalty, and then with her newfound team, she sets off.

During the Sasuke Recovery mission, Team 8 senses Guren's scent and follows it to a meadow, and there they are all shocked to find people encased in crystal, where Kakashi is stunned to see Crystal Release style.
